Sinus stents
Patients with chronic sinusitis suffer a number of frustrating symptoms:
- Facial pain and pressure
- Nasal congestion
- Headaches
discolored nasal discharg - Loss of smell and taste
Medications that are often prescribed for chronic sinusitis patients include antibiotics, nasal steroids, antihistamines, oral steroids, decongestants, and saline irrigations.
The downside of surgery
If symptoms continue despite medications, surgery may be an option. While surgery provides benefits for many patients, inflammation and scarring can take place even in the first 30 days, decreasing the effectiveness of surgery and causing symptoms to return. For those suffering from chronic sinusitis, this disheartening occurrence is all too common.
Sinus stents
Advanced technology has been developed that is clinically proven to reduce post-surgical inflammation and scarring.
The PROPEL® sinus stent is an FDA-approved treatment option that is placed in the sinuses after surgery. These sinus stents are small, spring-like devices that are coated with an anti-inflammatory drug.
The stent props the sinuses open while the oral steroids reduce inflammation. The device promotes healing and reduces the need for repeat surgeries by locally delivering a drug to the sinuses. After 30 to 45 days following surgery, the stent dissolves.
