Rhinoplasty, often referred to as a ‘nose job,’ refers to a surgical procedure to modify the shape or function of the nose. It’s one of the most common types of plastic surgery and is performed for a variety of reasons, some functional, some aesthetic.
Functional (medical) rhinoplasty
A functional rhinoplasty is performed to correct structural issues of the nose such as a deviated septum, nasal collapse, or other issues that may impair breathing in some way. By correcting these issues, day-to-day breathing problems and even sleep disturbances can be remedied.
Cosmetic rhinoplasty
Cosmetic rhinoplasty is commonly done to resize and reshape the appearance of the nose, ultimately resulting in an enhanced profile or contoured facial appearance. The outcome for many results in a boost in self-confidence. Rhinoplasty is an effective procedure to:
- Reduce the size of a disproportionate nose
- Straighten any bumps of the bridge of the nose
- Narrow the appearance of nostrils
- Reshape the top of the nose
The right expertise
Both general plastic surgeons and otolaryngologists commonly perform rhinoplasties. The plastic surgeon is trained in general surgery followed by a plastic surgery fellowship with facial plastics as part of their curriculum. The otolaryngologist is trained on all aspects of the ear, nose, throat (ENT), as well as head and neck surgery.
Because many undergoing rhinoplasties for medical reasons may also consider having an aesthetic rhinoplasty done at the same time, finding a surgeon with just the right expertise is critically important. Oakdale ENT’s Dr. Casey Fisher has the expertise that is perfectly suited for functional + cosmetic rhinoplasties. He is double board-certified, having completed training in otolaryngology and facial plastic surgery.
For those who wish to supplement their medical rhinoplasty by adding an aesthetic component, we encourage you to take the first step with a consultation. You’ll discuss your goals and desired results and get answers to questions and concerns.
